ALUMINUM RACE HEAD INSTALLATION
Insure that block deck surfaces are clean and free of debris and old gasket material
Install head gaskets with square corner at the front. Gaskets are marked "FRONT"
1 gasket will be face up, 1 will be face down.
Use new head bolts, with washers. ARP or equivalent recommended.
Follow gasket manufacturer’s recommendations regarding sealer.
Note that since the temperature bushing is installed there is a left and right head.
Threaded bushing goes to the rear on driver side, freeze plug to the rear on passenger side.
Short side of stand goes toward exhaust manifold.
Rocker shaft must be oriented with single ¼"hole at top of right hand end, #4 stand.
Install set screw provided in threaded hole of stand #4, it must enter hole in the top of rocker shaft. Oil holes for rocker arms must be at the bottom of shaft.
Assemble rockers with top oil hole to the right, low side of stands and valve end of rocker arm toward you.
Studs are installed at front and rear lower corners where the original studs were.
Back off rocker adjusters and carefully align pushrods with lifters and adjusting balls.
Use adapter coupling nuts on studs.
Place a washer under each fastener. Torque bolts to 23 ft. lbs.
Adjust valve lash to cam manufacturer’s recommendations.
Install carb stud into each adapter coupling to retain valve covers.
Steel valve covers will require 1-1/4" studs while T-Bird and most aluminum valve covers require 1-3/4" studs.
Pushrod length is typically 8.260" O.A.L.
Spark plugs are 10mm, 3/4"reach GASKETED SEAT. Do not use tapered seat plugs.

Above 10.5:1 compression or heavy use, a colder plug is recommended.
A 3/8" pipe thread bushing is installed in driver side head. Use 3/8 to ¼ bushing for 57 and later temperature senders.
It is a good idea to check end-play on oil pump drive rod at this point.
Install valley cover before installing heads.
Install intake manifold as original.
Plug vacuum port at back of manifold if not used.
Check length of manifold bolts to avoid damaging pushrods.
Start all bolts and check that manifold is centered front to back and side to side.
Torque manifold to head bolts to 10 ft. lbs. Check manifold alignment.
Finish tightening manifold to 24 ft. lbs. starting from center and working toward ends.
Plug end manifold bolt holes in heads with 3/8-16 X ½" bolts
Street Engines will need 32-35° total ignition advance. Reduce if detonation occurs.
Race Engines usually need 30-32° total ignition advance.
